United Nations Security Council (UNSC) will tonight hold an emergency meeting on the military offensive Turkey started in northern Syria yesterday.
A closed-door meeting was called by the European members of the council; the UK, France, Germany, Belgium and Poland.
UN Spokesperson Farhan Haq said that Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is "deeply concerned" because of the developments in northeast Syria.
Saying that military operations should be in accordance with the UN Convention and international humanitarian law, Haq called for the protection of civilians and civilian infrastructure. He added that he does not believe the Syrian question can be resolved through military means.
UN Humanitarian Aid Coordinator Panos Moumtsiz said yesterday that they "prepare for the worst" and that Turkey should keep the roads to northeast Syria open for the aid to be delivered to civilians. (PT/VK)
