UN Security Council reiterates 'federal solution' proposal in Cyprus

The United Nations Security Council held a closed session on Cyprus yesterday (July 12). In the written statement issued following the session, the members of the Security Council expressed their full support for the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP). 

The statement stated that recent elections held on both sides presented "a window of opportunity," and urged both sides to take tangible steps and implement other gestures of goodwill to promote a conducive climate.

In the statement which stressed the need to avoid unilateral actions, the following was said:

"The members of the Security Council reiterated the importance of the sides and all involved parties showing openness, flexibility and compromise, with the goal of returning to formal negotiations to achieve a comprehensive and just settlement based on a bicommunal, bizonal federation with political equality as set out in relevant Security Council resolutions."
