The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) released the Labor Force Statistics for April 2020 today (July 10).
Accordingly, the number of unemployed persons aged 15 years old and over dropped by 427 thousand to 3 million 775 thousand in the period of April 2020 compared with the same period of the previous year.
In April 2020, the unemployment rate was measured as 12.8 percent with 0.2 percentage point decrease. Non-agricultural unemployment rate occurred as 14.9 percent with 0.1 percentage point decrease.
Employment rate: 41.1 percent
According to the TurkStat, the number of employed persons decreased by 2 million 585 thousand to 25 million 614 thousand persons in April 2020 compared with the same period of the previous year. The employment rate occurred as 41.1 percent with 4.9 percentage point decrease.
While the number of agricultural employment decreased by 491 thousand persons, industry decreased by 209 thousand, construction decreased by 361 thousand and services decreased by 1 million 524 thousand..
According to the distribution of employment by sector; 17.5 percent was employed in agriculture, 20.9 percent was employed in industry, 4.9 percent was employed in construction and 56.7 percent was employed in services.
Labor force participation rate: 47.2 percent
The number of persons in the labor force realized 29 million 388 thousand persons with 3 million 13 thousand persons decrease in April 2020 compared with the same period of the previous year. labor force participation rate was 47.2 percent with 5.7 percentage point decrease.
The rate of unregistered employment: 28.7 percent
The ratio of persons working without any social security relating to the main job occurred 28.7 percent with 5.5 percentage point decrease in April compared with the same period of the previous year.
The rate of unregistered employment was 17.3 percent with 5.8 percentage point decrease in the non-agricultural sector compared to last April.
Unemployment for the 15-64 age group
For the 15-64 age group, unemployment rate was 13.1 percent with 0.2 percentage point decrease and non-agricultural unemployment rate was 15 percent with 0.1 percentage point decrease compared to April 2019.
In this age group, employment rate occurred as 45.5 percent with 5.1 percentage point decrease and labor force participation rate occurred as 52.4 percent with 6 percentage point decrease.
Youth unemployment: 24.4 percent
In April 2020, the youth unemployment rate between aged 15-24 years realized as 24.4 percent with 1.2 percentage point increase and the youth employment rate realized as 26.1 percent with 7 percentage point decrease compared with the same month last year.
In the same period, labor force participation rate realized as 34.5 percent with 8.6 percentage point decrease. The rate of neither in employment nor in education realized as 29.1 percent with 5.7 percentage point increase compared with the same period of the previous year.
Seasonally adjusted unemployment rate
In April 2020, seasonally adjusted unemployment rate realized as 13.8 percent with 0.7 percentage point increase. The number of unemployed persons increased by 76 thousand to 4 million 80 thousand persons.
Seasonally adjusted employment rate realized as 41 percent with 1.6 percentage point decrease. Seasonally adjusted labor force participation rate was 47.5 percent with 1.5 percentage point decrease.
According to the seasonally adjusted number of employment by sectors, employment in agriculture decreased by 34 thousand persons, industry decreased by 164 thousand persons, construction decreased by 123 thousand persons and services decreased by 647 thousand persons. (HA/SD)
