The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) announced the consumer and producer price indexes for January 2020 today (February 3).
According to the figures shared by the Institute, the Consumer Price Index (CPI), also termed consumer inflation, has increased by 12.15 percent in comparison with the same month last year and by 1.35 percent in comparison with the previous month.
The highest price increase was in eggplant with 81.46 percent.

Highest annual increase in alcohol, tobacco
When compared with the prices in January 2019, alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 42.21 percent is the main group where the highest annual increase was measured in January 2020. This group is followed by education with a price increase of 15.11 percent and by miscellaneous goods and services with a price increase of 15.01 percent.
While the lowest annual increase was recorded in communication with 2.14 percent last month, recreation and culture with 5.66 percent, clothing and footwear with 6 percent and furnishing and household equipment with 7.51 percent were the other main groups with a low annual increase.

Highest monthly increase in goods, services
As for the highest monthly price increase in January 2020, it was measured in miscellaneous goods and services with 4.88 percent. This group is followed by food and non-alcoholic beverages with 4.65 percent and by healthcare with 3.96 percent.
In January 2020, the highest monthly decrease was 6.65 percent in clothing and footwear. In this period, the other groups that indicated a decrease are furnishing and household equipment with 1.44 percent, communication with 0.25 percent and alcoholic beverages and tobacco with 0.02 percent.

Prices of 268 items have increased
In January 2020, within average prices of 418 items in the consumer price index, average prices of 25 items remained unchanged while average prices of 268 items increased and those of 125 items decreased. (HA/SD)
