New Cyprus Party (YKP) in the northern part of the island met with Turkish socialist party representatives in Istanbul between 5 and 7 June. Socialist Party (SP), pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party (DTP), Freedom and Solidarity Party (ÖDP), Labor Party (EMEP) and Socialist Democracy Party (SDP) were present at the meeting.
The participants discussed possible joint politics the Cyprus issue, Turkey's occupation and demographic change.
YKP called for increased efforts and engagement on their Turkish counterparts to "reverse the situation which arose following the Turkish occupation of the northern Cyprus in 1974".
YKP executive general secretary Murat Kanatlı expressed hope for the future and said the meeting ended positive.
Commemorating its 20th anniversary, the party made a statement calling for a united Cyprus, which would eventually lead to a socialist Cyrus with their efforts.
"We continue our struggle amid threats and assaults. Turkey's pursuing a program of assimilation in Cyprus. As people migrated to the island, the islanders become a minority in their own country. This blocks the free will of the people of Cyprus."
