NATO heads of state and government decided in Istanbul summit to propose assistance to Iraq regarding training of security forces.
Sources said the modalities of training Iraqi security forces have not yet become clear.
Sources said that NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer would draft a report on what the Alliance could do to restructure Iraqi defense institutions.
NATO military authorities would then make their recommendations to NATO Council. The Council would make the final decision, the sources said, stating that the result was expected to become certain before the summer ends.
Studies are underway to determine whether or not the training would be under the NATO umbrella, or this training would be given in Iraq or any other country.
Efforts are underway to overcome the disagreement between France and U.S. on the issue.
Ankara is not positive toward giving training in Iraq, but not distant to alternative of giving the training in a third country.
It was reported that Turkey's training Iraqi soldiers in Jordan may be in question.
Meanwhile, Turkey started studies to train Iraqi police in Jordan.
Talks continue regarding the issue and Ankara called for information from Jordan about the program implemented in police training. (AY-AÖ) (YE)
