The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has ordered Turkey to pay the conscientious objector Halil Savda 2,500 euro in compensation.
Five members of the Antimilitarist Platform including Savda had gathered in front of the Israeli Consulate in İstanbul in solidarity with the Israeli conscientious objectors on August 1, 2006 and Halil Savda had read the press statement.
Savda had been sentenced to 5 months in prison on charge of "indisposing people to engage in military service" by reading the press statement with the headline "We are in solidarity with the conscientious objector".
After the judgement was upheld by the Supreme Court of Appeal, Savda applied to the ECtHR relying on Article 10 (Freedom of Expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR).
Upholding the conscientious objector's application, the court has ordered Turkey to pay Savda 2,500 euro in compensation (EKN/DG)
