With the highest temperature recorded in Şırnak's Cizre district with 47.5 degrees, Turkey saw the 6th hottest August of the last 50 years in 2021.
As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA) based on the data of the Directorate General of Meteorology (MGM), the average temperatures in the western and southern coasts were above seasonal normals.
The average temperature in Turkey in August had long been 24.5 degrees. However, last month, it was 26 degrees.
While the lowest temperature recorded in August in Turkey was in Sivas' Kangal district with 5.2 degrees, the highest temperature was measured in Şırnak's Cizre in southeast Turkey with 47.5 degrees.
Details by regions
For many years, the average temperature in the Marmara region, where İstanbul is located, had been 23.9 degrees. Last month, namely in August 2021, this average temperature was 25.9 degrees. While the lowest temperature was seen in Lüleburgaz in Kırklareli with 13 degrees, the highest temperature was in Edirne's Uzunköprü with 40 degrees.
As for the Aegean region, the average temperature was 28 degrees last month while it had long been measured as 25.8 degrees. While the lowest temperature was seen in Tavşanlı in Kütahya with 9 degrees, the highest one was recorded in Marmaris in Muğla with 45.5 degrees.
In the Mediterranean region, the average August temperature had long been 26.9 degrees. Last month, it was 28.8 degrees.
While the lowest temperature was in Göksun with 8.4 degrees, the highest one was recorded in Köyceğiz with 46.1 degrees.
In Central Anatolia, the August temperature was 23.1 on average last month; it had long been 22 degrees.
According to the MGM data, the highest temperature recorded in the region was in Kırıkkale and Polatlı with 39.4 degrees.
In the Black Sea region, the lowest temperature was recorded in Kastamonu with 9.2 degrees last month while the highest temperature was in Boyabat with 41 degrees. In the region where the average August temperature had long been 22.4 degrees, it was 23.7 last month.
In Eastern Anatolia, the average temperature in August 2021 was 23.9 degrees. It had long been 22.8 degrees, according to the reports.
While the lowest temperature was seen in Kars' Sarıkamış with 6.5 degrees, the highest temperature was in Palu with 40.8 degrees.
Lastly, in Southeastern Anatolia, the average temperature was 31.4 degrees in August 2021 while it had long been 30.3. The lowest temperature recorded in the region was 16.6 degrees in Bilecik.
The hottest August in Europe
According to the analyses of the European Union (EU) Copernicus Climate Change Service, the average temperatures in July and August in Europe was nearly 1 degree higher than the ones recorded in 1991-2020.
The data has shown that this summer, the temperatures were 0.1 degrees higher than the ones in 2010 and 2018, when the continent had seen its hottest summers. Moreover, this August has been cited as the third hottest August so far, together with August 2017. This August was 0.3 degrees hotter than the temperature average of the 1991-2020 period. (TP/SD)
