As Turkey has had a warm winter so far, record-high temperatures were recorded in 72 locations in January, according to a statement by the Turkish State Meteorological Service (MGM).
"While the average temperature in January had been °C 2.7 (°F 36.8) for many years, it was °C 5.4 (°F 41.7) in January 2021," said the MGM.
The lowest temperature measured throughout the month was -34.5 C in the eastern province of Ağrı and the highest temperature was 28.8 C in Cide, a town on the coast of the Black Sea in the northern Kastamonu province, according to the figures.
February may be cooler than the last month as the MGM forecast shows a cold spell starting today (February 11) will affect the entire country.
It will start from the northeast and snowfall is expected in several cities tomorrow (February 12), says the MGM.
Low rainfall may cause a decrease in agricultural production, said climate experts quoted by Yeşil Gazete.
Located in the Mediterranean Basin, one of the most affected regions from climate change, Turkey didn't have enough precipitation in the fall and winter.
The experts pointed out that this might lead to a food scarcity problem and health problems in the near future. (TP/VK)
