Edelman, a global communications marketing firm, has released its 2019 Trust Barometer based on online surveys conducted in 26 countries with the participation of over 33 thousand people from October 9 to November 16, 2018. Edelman has been releasing this annual global report since 2001.
According to the findings of the report, while the majority of the participants from Turkey believe that companies can improve the society, they distrust the media the most. The report has also shown that 52 percent of the general population in Turkey trust the government.
Though people of Turkey have a distrust of international organizations, the rate of participants trusting these organizations is on the increase.
Here are some of the highlights from the 2019 Trust Barometer:
Women trust the government less than men
72 percent of the participants from Turkey believe that "a company can take specific actions that both increase profits and improve the economic and social conditions in the communities where it operates."
52 percent of the citizens of Turkey who participated in the survey stated that they trust the government, which marks a 1-percent increase in comparison with the previous year. As for the average rate of trust in government across 26 countries, it has been announced as 47 percent.
The results of the survey have also indicated that 57 percent of the participants from Turkey trust in civil society organizations, which marks a 1-percent decrease when compared to the previous year. While women trust the government by 3 percent less than men, they trust civil society organizations by 3 percent more than men.
Increasing trust in the EU and UN
In 2019, while the trust of in the European Union (EU) has increased by 7 points in comparison with the previous year and reached 40 percent among the participants from Turkey, the trust in the United Nations (UN) has also increased by 5 percent and become 41 percent.
One out of every four people distrust media
The 2019 Trust Barometer has also shown that the people in Turkey distrust the media the most. According to the report, while the trust in the media has increased by three points and reached 47 percent on a global scale, it has fallen by three points in Turkey and become 27 percent.
Turkey has ranked second after Russia in terms of distrust of its media. (EÖ/HK/SD)
