The PIRLS (the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) 2021 results have been announced.
The study is being carried out by the International Association for the Evaluation of Educational Achievement (IEA) which has headquarters in Armsterdam, the Netherlands, and data processing and research center in Hamburg, Germany every five years.
Despite coinciding with school disruptions due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the PIRLS 2021 data collection successfully included nearly 400,000 students in 57 countries worldwide.
According to the 2021 report, the level of success in reading tests increased in the European countries despite the Covid-19 pandemic.
Singapore at the top
Singapore is in the first rank with 587 points, Hong Kong on second with 573 points, and Russia on third with 567 points.
Great Britain came forth with 558 points and Finland the fiftth wiwth 549 points.
Sount Africa ranked the last in the study which 57 countries participated with 384 points.
Turkey was placed just below the scale centerpoint of 500 and in t. PIRLS uses the scale centerpoint as a point of reference that remains constant from assessment to assessment. The centerpoint of 500 was set to correspond to the mean of overall achievement in 2001.
Turkey had participated in the PIRLS study in 2001 before. The country participated in the study that covers students who completed the 4th grade for the second time after 20 years and was the second country that raised its score with an increase of 47 points but it was still under the average.
Turkey was in rank 28 among 35 countries with 449 points in 2001, and in 2021 it was in rank 39 among 57 countries with 496 points. (NT/PE)
