Turkey is not in the List of World’s 57 Largest Book Publishers

The List of World’s 57 Largest Book Publishers has been released by magazines Livres Hebdo and Publishers Weekly. The list includes 57 publishers; British Pearson Company is at the top with income of $7,072.

Celal: Our publishing sector is large enough to be in the list

Turkey couldn’t enter the list. The President of Turkish Publishers Association (TYB), Metin Celal told bianet:

“According to the research called Global Publishing Statistics made by International Publishers Association (IPA), Turkey is the 13^th largest publishing sector in the world with income of 1,682,000,000 Euros.

“So we should have been in the list. I think, the reason was that the research of Livres Hebdo and Publishers Weekly didn’t include Turkey. We have publishers may enter the list not necessarily from the top.”

Education publishers took place near the top

The list of Levres Hebdo and Publishers Weekly has publishers from 20 countries.

Fluctuations in the field of publishing, effects of digital publishing and China’s growing share in the publishing world caught the attention considering the list.

Two publishers from China; China South Publishing & Media Group Co., Ltd and Phoenix Publishing and Media Company took place near the top.

Education and profession publishers were placed on the top; Thomas Reuters, Reed Elsevier and Wolters Kluwer follow Pearson.

Penguin is the largest trade publisher

Penguin Random House keeps its title ‘world’s largest trade publisher’ while the biggest factor affecting publishers in the ranking was the participation of Macmillan Science and Education with Springer Science and Business Media. Springer Nature is 53% controlled by Holtzbrinck.

Brazil’s largest publishers Abril Educacao and Editora Saraiva (the publishing divisions of Saraiva Group) also affected the ranking of the list. (EA/BD)
