The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has stated that the assassination of Iran's General Qassem Soleimani will escalate mistrust and instability in the region.
The ministry said that Turkey is gravely concerned over escalating tensions between the US and Iran, the state-run AA reported.
"It is obvious that US airstrike will escalate mistrust, instability in the region," the ministry stated.
"Turkey strongly reiterates warning that turning Iraq into a conflict zone will hurt peace, stability."
A US drone strike earlier in the day killed General Qasem Soleimani, the head of Iran Revolutionary Guards' Quds Force, and Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, a senior commander of Iraq's Hashd al-Shaabi or Popular Mobilization Units (PMU).
The US said it killed Soleimani because he "was actively developing plans to attack American diplomats and service members in Iraq and throughout the region.'' (AS/VK)
