In a written statement, the Governor's Office of Van has confirmed the news that a woman from Afghanistan with two children, who was trying to cross into Turkey, has frozen to death in Iran's Belesur village.
Trying to cross into Turkey through the border with Iran, the woman and her two children got caught up in a storm. While the woman has frozen to death, the children walked to a village in Van's Özalp district and took shelter there. The Governor's Office has briefly stated:
"On January 1, 2022, some social media accounts posted that a mother of two froze to death while trying to cross the Turkey-Iran border and the children survived by taking shelter in the village.
"In the examination undertaken upon this, it was detected that no incident had been reported to or detected by our law enforcement unit and it was determined that the mentioned places were contradictory.
"With a deeper investigation, it has been detected that this sad incident did not happen within the borders of our country but in a village named Belesur in the Islamic Republic of Iran near the Turkey border and the people were handed over to the soldiers of Iran by villagers." (AÖ/SD)
