After Betül Yaşar, the Diyadin Co-Mayor in eastern Ağrı province from the Peoples' Democratic Party's (HDP), was taken into custody yesterday (July 13), a trustee has been appointed to the municipality.
In a statement released by the Governor's Office, it has been indicated that Diyadin Sub-Governor Hasan Doğan has been appointed as "Acting Mayor."
As reported by the state-run Anadolu Agency (AA), in its written statement, the Governor's Office of Ağrı has referred to the detention of Diyadin Mayor Betül Yaşar "as part of the investigation file no. 2019/2291 conducted by the Ağrı Chief Public Prosecutor's Office."
"As per the Article 127 of the Constitution and the Article 47 of the Municipality Law no. 5393 and upon the approval of our Ministry of Interior dated July 13, 2020, Betül Yaşar has been removed from office as a temporary measure and, as per the Articles 45 and 46 of the Municipality Law, Diyadin Sub-Governor has been appointed as the Acting Mayor of Diyadin," the statement of the Governor's Office has read further.
Trustees appointed to 47 municipalitiesIn the last local elections on March 31, 2019, the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) won 65 municipalities across Turkey. Three of these 65 municipalities were metropolitan municipalities, five of them were provincial, 45 were district and 12 were town municipalities. While trustees have been appointed to 47 of these municipalities, the certificates of elections of six elected mayors were not given as they had been discharged from public service by a Statutory Decree. |
33 people detained in Antep
On the other side, the state-run AA has further reported that 33 people, including HDP Antep Provincial Co-Chair Musa Aydın, central Şahinbey and Şehitkamil District Co-Chairs, Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Antep Co-Chairs, two neighborhood heads and one lawyer, have been detained as part of an investigation against the "Kurdistan Workers Party/ Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) terrorist organization."
While warrants were issued to detain 33 people as part of this investigation conducted by the Gaziantep Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, the 33 people in question have been detained in house raids earlier today. (TP/SD)
