TRT 6, Turkey’s official television network in Kurdish since 2009 changed its name to TRT Kurdî.
The decision took effect after its 6th anniversary ceremony held in Cemal Reşit Rey Concert Hall, Istanbul.
Presented in Turkish and Kurdish, the ceremony started with the keynote of TRT General Manager Şenol Göka.
“TRT Kurdi both detected and developed a sensitivity in Turkey. I hope it will grow even more with its followers around our region. This means that: along with our brother who speak this language , all together, I can say that we will have many more productions and take them to the screen. Perhaps this is also a surprise."
The ceremony hosted several dengbej [a term of tradition Kurdish jam session artists] performances from the regions of Iran, Armenia, Iraq, Turkey and Caucasus.
TRT Şeş started broadcasting on 1 January 2009. Previously, TRT broadcasted content for 30 minutes in Kurdish starting from 7 June 2004.
The opening ceremony of the TRT Şeş was boycotted by then Democratic Society Party (DTP) deputies. (NV/BM)
