Tension climbs in diplomatic relations through statements issued concerning the independence referendum decided to be held by the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) on September 25.
Iran has toughened its stance in its latest statements; Saudi Arabia has proposed to be the mediator; Iraqi central government has reiterated its objection to the constitution referendum; Erdoğan has issued a statement saying “Iraq cannot be divided”.
Iran: We will close the border
Iranian National Security High Council Secretary General Ali Shamkhani stating that they will close the border in case the KRG declares independence, said “If the Kurdistan Region separates from Iraq, we will reconsider all our agreements with the Kurdistan Region”.
Iraq: It is against the constitution
Iraqi Vice President and Coalition of Law State Chair Nuri Maliki addressed the constitution and said, “We will not let a second Israel be found in the northern Iraq”.
Maliki made this statement to the Kurdistan Negotiation Committee. The committee has been continuing its talks in Baghdad.
Speaking after the meeting, Maliki said:
“Referendum and other subjects require a constitutional framework. If a constitutional framework is established, their step will be legitimate. However, taking a step against the constitution will cause problems for both themselves and Iraq”.
Saudi Arabia proposed to be the mediator
KRG President Masoud Barzani was visited by Saudi Arabian Minister in Charge of Gulf Affairs Tamer Alsübhan and his accompanies.
According to Rudaw, Saudi Arabia stated that they are prepared for solution to the problems between Erbil and Baghdad. In response, Barzani said that they are open to negotiations.
Turkey: You knock on our door when you get into a jam, but…
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made a statement at the Atatürk Airport concerning the referendum ahead of his visit to the US.
Erdoğan called out to Barzani:
“When you get into a jam, you knock on our door, you get all sorts of support from us…But when it comes to separation of Iraq, you will go your own way.
“Now we will have a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi in the US. As far as we see, we are looking at the same direction”. (HK/TK)
