After the workplace murder that left 10 workers dead in Istanbul's Torun Center, workers protested their working conditions.
Following the halt of construction in the site, the majority of workers have left the premisses. While some of them reportedly left for good, others have the intentions to return later on.
The remaining workers, on the other hand, released a statement and shouted slogans in Kurdish and Turkish to urge the company owners to account for their responsibilities.
"Construction worker is not a slave," Maruf Eren, a worker, told bianet. He also urged the removal of contracted working system.
"If they allocated only the expense of one apartment to occupational safety, our 10 friends would be here," he continued. If one of these people were Aziz Torun's son, could he make the same statement? This is not an accident, this is a workplace murder.
Ömer Öztekin said the following:
"The light of 10 households is down now. We have been mentioning of the issue for a month. The lift person would come and pretend to look around and then leave in a hour. All fuzzy. They are exhausting us off here. It wouldn't matter if we lose our job or not. We no longer fear from anyone." (NV/BM)
