Three village and neighborhood heads, or mukhtars, have been arrested for an attack late yesterday (April 5) on the Çorum provincial head of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
The incident reportedly happened at around 11.30 p.m. the three mukhtars blocked Murat Günay's way after he left the party office following a meeting. The three people forced Günay into an alley, he said after the incident.
A quarrel between the mukhtars and the AKP official turned into a fist fight. A nearby security camera recorded the incident.
After the attack, the police detained four people: head of the Mukhtars Association, Z.O., Eskice village head Ü.B. and Elmalı village head S.E., F.Y., who was found to be the nephew of an MP, and a person whose name could not be learned.
The dispute reportedly arose from the distribution of aid cards to those in need. The mukhtars had requested 200 cards from the AKP's provincial chair, which he refused.
A judge later arrested the three mukhtars for "battery" and "extortion."
