The Ministry of Education regulated the school starting age. The regulation states that any children over 66 months of age as of September 30, 2012 would be registered to elementary school. 60 to 66 months old children, however, would be registered with the written consent of their parents, and only if deemed ready in terms of development.
Accordint to the regulation the school registrations is to be conducted centrally via e-school system.
The children who are 37-66 months old as of September 2012 will be registered to kindergartens or prep-classes while children between 48-66 months of age will continue to pre-school classes, according to the new regulation.
Strong reaction against the 4+4+4 formulation
The law, which set the school starting age as five, had been accepted by the parliament following fierce discussions regarding the content and the procedures.
The non-governmental organizations and the public had strongly opposed to the law.
The People’s Republic Party had submitted the Law 6287, which details the school starting age, to the Constitutional Court with the request of repealing the law.(YY)
