The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), the state agency responsible for producing official statistics on Turkey, has shared the labor force statistics for October 2021 earlier today (December 10).
The TurkStat has announced the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate as 11.2 percent. According to TurkStat, the number of unemployed aged 15 and over decreased by 75 thousand to 3 million 717 thousand persons in October 2021 when compared to the previous month. The unemployment rate stood at 11.2 percent with a 0.2 percentage point decrease.
The number of employed persons reportedly increased by 180 thousand to 29 million 581 thousand persons in the period of October 2021 when compared to the previous month. The employment rate occurred as 46.2 percent with 0.2 percentage point increase.
According to TurkStat, the number of persons in the labor force was 33 million 297 thousand persons with 104 thousand persons increase in October 2021 when compared to the previous month. Labor force participation rate was 52 percent with 0.1 percentage point increase.
Youth unemployment: 20.1 percent
The youth unemployment rate in the 15-24 age group was 20.1 percent with 0.8 percentage point decrease compared to the previous month and the employment rate was 33.4 percent with 0.3 percentage point increase. The labor force participation rate in this age group was 41.8 percent with 0.1 percentage point decrease compared to the previous month.
55.4 percent employment in services sector
In October 2021, the number of agricultural employment increased by 33 thousand persons, services increased by 211 thousand persons while industry decreased by 58 thousand persons and construction decreased by 4 thousand persons. According to the distribution of employment by sector; 17 percent was employed in agriculture, 21.5 percent in industry, 6.1 percent in construction and 55.4 percent was employed in services.
Labor underutilization rate: 22.8 percent
In October 2021, the rate of composite measure of labor underutilization consisting of time-related underemployment, potential labor force and unemployment was 22.8 percent with 1 percentage point increase compared to the previous month. While the combined rate of time-related underemployment and unemployment stood at 15.6 percent in October, the combined rate of unemployment and potential labor force was 18.7 percent.
Unregistered employment
In October 2021, the rate of unregistered employment, which indicates the share of employment that is not affiliated with social security institution in total employment, was 29.5 percent with a 2.3 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year.
The rate of unregistered employment in the non-agricultural sector was 18.1 percent with 2.6 percentage point decrease compared to the same month of the previous year, according to TurkStat. (HA/SD)
