Several leftists organizations across Europe -among them those founded by Turkish migrants- called for an end to the bureaucratic process for the extradition of Musa Doğan, a political asylum seeker currently residing in Sweden.
Doğan was condemned to life in Turkey in 1993, on allegations of being a member of the illegal Turkish Communist Party/Marxist-Leninist (TKP/ML). He participated in the hunger strikes in 2000 and as a result, was diagnosed with Wernicke Korsakoff syndrome, which led to a conditional parole of six months in 2001. Yet, upon his release Doğan escaped to Sweden and applied for refugee status. Two years ago, he was granted permission to stay in the country.
Nonetheless, last January Swedish police took him under arrest on grounds that the INTERPOL issued a warrant upon Turkey's request. He'll be kept under arrest until a court rules on his case for extradition.
Simultaneously, several organizations such as the Swedish Left Party, Geneva People's Center, and Swedish Democratic Federation of Peoples protested his arrest and claimed that Doğan will be imprisoned in Turkey despite heavy health problems.
They insist that there's "systematic torture" in Turkey and Doğan's life would be in danger if extradited.(EÜ/AGÜ)
