20-year-old M.Ç., who was doing his mandatory military service in Turkey's Aegean province of Afyon, has allegedly committed suicide.
While it has been claimed that M.Ç., who was on his mandatory military service at the Officers' Club in Afyon, ended his life while mounting guard, it has also been stated that M.Ç. did not have any problems.
As reported by Hürriyet newspaper, the relatives of M.Ç. said that he went to the district of Ödemiş in İzmir 10 days ago to separately visit his mother and father, then, went to Ankara for the military specialty examination.* After the exam, M.Ç. returned to the military unit in Afyon.
The dead body of M.Ç. will be put to rest in Ödemiş today (November 20).
On December 3, 2013, in his response to the parliamentary inquiry submitted by Republican People's Party (CHP) MP Mahmut Tanal, Minister of National Defense of the time İsmet Yılmaz stated that 1,036 soldiers committed suicide from 2002 to 2013. (EKN/SD)
* The soldiers, who do their mandatory military service and would like to take up military service/ being a soldier as an occupation/ profession later in life, sit for the military specialty examination.
