The findings of the "Student Success Monitoring Survey" conducted by the Ministry of National Education with the participation of 112 thousand 465 students across Turkey have been shared with the public.
As reported by Mustafa Mert Bildircin from daily BirGün, the survey, which is the most comprehensive monitoring survey conducted in Turkey in terms of participation, has revealed that 40 percent of all fourth-year students participating in the survey do not understand what they read.
The survey has also shown that 51 percent of all participant students cannot reason while solving problems in mathematics.
While the Ministry has been working on a model where students are not given homeworks, the survey has indicated that the students doing more homeworks are more successful at school.
62 percent could answer questions of knowledge
The success of fourth-year students from 81 provinces of Turkey in the fields of Turkish, Mathematics and Science has also been measured by the "Student Success Monitoring Survey in Turkish-Mathematics-Science".
According to the survey conducted with the aim of measuring the impact of students, teachers and schools on academic success, while 62 percent of 112 thousand 465 fourth-year students could answer the questions measuring knowledge in Turkish, only 59.97 percent of them could answer the questions on reading-comprehension.
That is, the survey has shown that 40 percent of the fourth-year students participating in the survey could not understand what they read.
51 percent have failed in mathematics
112 thousand 322 students participating in the survey of the Ministry also sat for a 15-question test on mathematics as part of the survey.
While 63.43 percent of these students could answer the questions measuring knowledge in mathematics, 51 percent were not successful at answering the questions of mathematical reasoning.
On the other side, science has become the field where the students are the most successful. While the students could answer 65 percent of the questions measuring scientific knowledge correctly, they were successful at answering questions of scientific reasoning. (TP/SD)
