Hundreds of people gathered in Kadıköy, one of the most prominent districts of İstanbul to commemorate 32 people who lost their lives during Suruç Explosion in Urfa province, near Turkey-Syria border carried out against members of Federation of Socialist Youth Associations (SGDF) before going Kobani to reconstruct the city.
Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) called for people to commemorate.
The police used tear gas and water cannon after announcing the crowd to break up. People scattered through side streets.
Police detained at least seven people. Young people under age of 18 were among them.
Commemorating in Beşiktaş district
HDP and Peoples’ Democratic Congress (HDK) also commemorated in Beşiktaş district of İstanbul.
The crowd marched from HDP Headquarters in Beşiktaş while the deceased people’s photographs.
SGDF representative Özgür Bedel made a press statement:
““The ones who cannot say a word to ISIS and officials in Ankara who feed ISIS are joint offenders of this atrocity.”
Bedel, issued a call for peace:
“Our comrades who believed in peace and freedom martyrized. We know Roboski Massacre, Sivas Massacre…You couldn’t discourage socialists, revolutionists, patriots and you cannot. ISIS militants will be defeated. I promise once again on behalf of socialist youth.”
After the press statement, the crowd went to condolence tent in Kadıköy. (AS/BD)
