Turkey’s 9th President Süleyman Demirel died at 02.05 a.m. from heart failure at the Güven Hospital in Ankara where he had been undergoing treatment due to respiratory tract infection.
According to the statement of the hospital, Süleyman Demirel who was taken to hospital on May 13, had been worse since June 16 and died today because of respiratory tract infection and heart failure.
Süleyman Demirel who was prime minister seven times between 1965 and 1993 and president from 1993 to 2000 died at the age of 90.
Süleyman Demirel will be laid to rest on June 19 in Village İslamköy of Isparta province where he was born.
Süleyman Demirel was born on October 1, 1924.
Demirel who was prime minister of Turkey for a longer time than İsmet İnönü and Recep Tayyip Erdoğan was Director General of the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) at the age of 31, party leader at the age of 40 and then prime minister at the age of 41.
Süleyman Demirel was a politician who formed seven governments after 1946 in which Turkey transited to a multi-party system. (EKN/EA/BD)
