Four students have been taken into custody following the protest in Beyazıt Square of İstanbul in support of academics who are being prosecuted for signing declaration entitled “We will not be a party to this crime”.
Academic members from various universities joined the solidarity protest held by SES Aksaray Branch, İstanbul Chamber of Medical Doctors, and Eğitim-Sen (Education Union) No.6 for the academics pleading today (February 10) in prosecutions.
After the press statement in Beyazıt Square, tumult took place between security officers and students at the time entrance to the campus started.
It was heard that a woman student emphasized showing her student card. Academic members as well wanted to enter by showing their cards, and reacted against hindering students.
Police moving away those in front of the gate tried to prevent press members from taking pictures.
Undercover cops and riot squad teams intervened in, police forming circle around the campus blocked passings.
Four students detained by being handcuffed from behind in the campus were put in riot squad vehicle. Students in the campus chanted as, “Police out, science in”. (BK/TK)
