Minister of Interior Süleyman Soylu made a speech at the "Workshop on Evaluating the Human Resources Necessary for the Transformation of Security Management" in Ankara today (September 23).
Announcing the number of people discharged from the Directorate General of Security by Statutory Decrees, Minister Soylu stated, "The number of those discharged from law enforcement agencies after December 17-25 [corruption and bribe investigation in 2013] and July 15 [coup attempt in 2016] only by Statutory Decrees is approximately 33 thousand."
Indicating that "they have closed the gap with the people they have recruited", Soylu also announced the number of personnel currently on duty in law enforcement agencies of Turkey as 306 thousand.
Touching upon a series of issues concerning security, Soylu indicated that in the post-July 15 period, a series of serious steps have been taken for law enforcement units, adding that they aim to achieve not a reactionary, but a principal management of security.
'We have revived the establishment of wardership'
Underlining that they have particularly focused on both recruitment of personnel and their diversification based on their education and specialization, Süleyman Soylu stated the following in brief:
"An important step that we have taken in the light of the principles that I have mentioned about personnel is our step about bazaar and neighborhood warders. It reflects our understanding of diversifying law enforcement personnel in the face of diversifying threats.
"That is, we have started to use a separate unit to maintain public order in bazaars and neighborhoods. At that point, upon the instruction of our Dear President, we have once again revived the establishment of wardership, which became obsolete for some time.
"We recruited new people as of 2016 and, up to this day, we have appointed 19 thousand 600 warders across the country. Taken together with our previously employed warders, our current number of warders is 21 thousand 300. The procedure of employment of 8 thousand 242 of them is still ongoing. When it is completed, the number will be close to 30 thousand." (HA/SD)
