Solidarity Academies founded in 2016 by academics who were discharged through statutory decrees but aimed at continuing to pass on their academic knowledge through alternative local academic organizations, will start the new academic year with inauguration lectures.
The inauguration lectures of the 2017-2018 Academic Year will start on October 3-10 in Solidarity Academies founded in the provinces of Ankara, İstanbul, İzmir, Antalya, Kocaeli, Mersin, Eskişehir and Dersim.
Aims of the Solidarity Academies
The academics of the Solidarity Academies have announced their aims as;
"to relate academic knowledge production to the prioritization of peace, nonviolence and justice in the socio-political sphere,
"to continue such knowledge production processes in the non-university spheres, and
"to maintain their relation with the dare-to knowledge that requires courage in producing and sharing knowledge, prioritizing peace vis-a-vis the authoritarian structures [and thus] to produce and share knowledge with reference to equality, freedom, and solidarity that are excluded from the university sites.
Kocaeli
The opening lecture of the Kocaeli Solidarity Academy will be on October 4 at the Kocaeli Higher Education Foundation.
The first lecture of ""Freedom of Thought in the Middle East and the Academia" by Fulya Atacan will be followed by the forum "Science and the Struggle"
Ankara
The opening lecture of the Ankara Solidarity Academy will be held by İsmail Beşikçi on October 7.
The first lecture of "Method of Science, Kurds, Armenians, Alewis" which will start at 5 p.m. will be followed by a concert by the band "Bandista".
İzmir
The lectures at the İzmir Solidarity Academy will begin on October 6, at 6.30 p.m. at Tepekule Congress and Exhibition Center.
Asst. Prof. Dr. Barış Ünlü will give the lecture "Academics for Emotions, Thoughts and Peace" and Asst. Prof. Dr. Lülüfer Körükmez will give the lecture "Performing Gender in the Academia". Prof. Dr. Ayşen Uysal will be the moderator.
Antalya
The lectures at the Antalya Solidarity Academy will begin on October 7, at 1 p.m. at the Nobel 1 Cafe.
The opening lecture which will focus on the evolution theory will be held by biologist Dr. Nermin Biter.
How it began?
The first steps of the Solidarity Academies were taken by the solidarity classes in Eskişehir, to be followed by the With NO-Campus Academics in İstanbul. The first organized example of the academies took form in September 2016 by the creation of Kocaeli Kocaeli Solidarity Academy-KODA). Today Solidarity Academies continue their activities in Ankara, Antalya, Dersim Eskişehir, İstanbul, İzmir, Kocaeli, Mardin, Mersin and Urfa.
The academics call all democratic organizations and actors to participate in and support our aspiration for nonviolent knowledge processes and setting the word for peace as the basis for the relation between the academia and society. (TP/ÇT/DG)
