Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Siirt MP Meral Danış Beştaş has submitted a petition to the Human Rights Inquiry Committee regarding the rights violations that the hunger-striking inmates are subjected to.

In her petition, Danış Beştaş requested the committee, which she is also a member of, to work on the rights violations, visiting prisons for assessment of the situation and determine the measures to take.

On November 7, 2018, HDP MP and Leyla Güven began a hunger strike, requesting the isolation on Abdullah Öcalan, the imprisoned leader Kurdistan Workers' Party, be lifted. Since then, more than 300 inmates from different prisons joined the hunger strike.

"Hygiene, food, clean water..."

In her petition, Danış Beştaş listed the problems that the hunger strikers face.

Some liquid nutrients that are indispensable for the hunger strikers are not sold at or sold at very high prices in prison canteens.
The necessary conditions of hygiene cannot be provided in the prisons and the tap water is dirty and rusty, especially in the Sincan Prison (Ankara).
Investigations have been opened against those who began hunger strikes. Disciplinary punishments and communication bans are applied against the prisoners. They have been banned from social events.
Putting the hunger strikers in cells, not giving them salt, sugar, carbonate and vitamin B complex, especially at the Elazığ, Amasya, Gümüşhane prisons in the first weeks of the hunger strikes.
