One of the suspects of the sexist attack on Başak Demirtaş on social media, V.Y., has been released after deposing. Proceedings about his step-uncle, V.M., who was also detained as part of the investigation launched by Sakarya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, is still underway.
V.Y. reportedly told the prosecutors that he didn't write the tweet against the spouse of Selahattin Demirtaş, the imprisoned former co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP).
The tweet was posted from an account named "VedatMuti7." It had a green circle emoji, which is used by the supporters of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Mahir Ünal, the media head of the AKP, announced "social media ethic rules" last month and recommended the party's supporters to put a green circle to their social media profiles to indicate that they abide by those rules.
After sexist remarks against Başak Demirtaş, a campaign was launched in support of her and the "VedatMuti7" account was suspended by Twitter.
The Presidency's communications head, Fahrettin Altun, said that "It is obvious to our nation that who these immoral people are and what they serve for by making those leaning to the terrorist organization aggrieved." (EMK/VK)
