İstanbul Platform Against Nuclear (NKP) has evaluated the aftermath of the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Station during the crisis between Russia and Turkey.
Akkuyu Nuclear Power Station to be Turkey’s first nuclear power station, planned to be built in Mersin following the crisis occurred with downing the Russian warplane, has turned out to have uncertain consequences.
At the meeting held in the Chamber of Electrical and Electronics Engineering İstanbul Branch, journalist Filiz Yavuz has read her statement with her baby Deniz in her arms.
Yavuz has stated that it has become obvious, that the Akkuyu Nuclear Power Station claimed to reduce the dependency on foreign sources following ties being destroyed due to downing the Russian warplane, was dependent on foreign sources at every stage ranging from the construction to fuel.
Expressing that Turkey and Russia would act as if everything was fine in fear that the nuclear power station agreement would go to international arbitration and they would have to pay compensation, Yavuz has stated that under the current environment of political crises no projects can be carried out for at least 60 following years like the nuclear power station project.
Guarantee of purchasing electricity for 15 years
“The international agreement concluded for Akkuyu authorizes the Russian state company for the entire procedure from the construction of the station to its operation. According to the same agreement, Turkey has to pay the Akkuyu Nuclear Inc. owned by Russian state companies for the electricity produced, due to the guarantee of purchase for 15 years even if Turkey does not need it.
“A similar agreement has been concluded with French and Japanese companies regarding the nuclear power station planned to be built in Sinop. All these evidences prove that nuclear power is a source of power which is dependent on foreign sources contrary to what has been said.”
AKP should forgo the stations
“The independence in power can not be gained through nuclear stations which are dependent on foreign sources in every stage from their construction to engineers and from their fuel to operations but through making use of the power we have economically and wisely, and developing small-scale renewable power sources which do not harm the nature and are approved by the people. Thus we can prevent our land from being polluted, our air and water from getting poisoned and protect the future of all creatures.
“We call on AKP (Justice and Development Party) Government to immediately give up all nuclear power station projects and primarily protect our constitutional right to live.” (NV/DG)
