Russia’s Minister of Defense, Nikolay Pankov has declared that they will set up a permanent naval base in Syria’s city of Tartus.
According to a report by Sputnik News, in his speech at parliament’s upper wing the Federation Council said, “We are going to have a permanent navy base available in Tartus in Syrian lands. Corresponding documents have been prepared. After these documents are approved at ministerial level we will ask you to approve this agreement”.

Missile systems
Russia has a maintenance and support facility for the navy in Tartus since 1977.
Russia had installed S-300 missile defense systems in here last week.
The facility in Tarsus is Russia’s only facility in the Mediterranean.
Tartus is close to the Lebanese border, across Cyprus. (YY/TK)
