The Tripoli government in Libya has released Saadi Gaddafi, a son of Muammar Gaddafi, the country's former leader who was toppled and killed during the 2011 uprising.
Along with Gaddafi, numerous political prisoners who completed their sentences or have not been convicted have been released as part of a reconciliation project initiated by the Tripoli government.
PM Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh confirmed the release of Saadi Gaddafi and Ahmad Ramadan, a former aide of Muammar Gaddafi, on his social media account.
Saadi Gaddafi, 47, headed to İstanbul on a private jet immediately after his release, according to reports by Reuters and local media.
During the rule of his father, Saadi Gaddafi had authority in the management of Libya's sports activities and was a player of the country's national football team.
He had fled to Niger after the ousting of his father but was brought back to the country and sent to prison in 2014. He was charged with misappropriation during his tenure as the head of the Libyan Football Federation.
Turkey has established good relations with Libya's Tripoli-based Government of National Unity and gave military and financial support to it against the war with Khalifa Haftar's Libyan National Army. (PT/VK)
