Aimed at contributing to the protection and defense of Northern Forests, the "Three-Monthly Monitoring Report" has been published by the Northern Forests Research Association, which regularly documents and reports the factors of threat and destruction targeting the forests.
The report covering the third quarter of 2021 (July-August-September) has shown that the forests in Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, Kuzey Çanakkale, İstanbul, Sakarya, Kocaeli, Düzce, Yalova, Balıkesir and Bursa provinces were faced with 436 factors of threat, destruction and defense.
When considered on a regional basis; 120 factors were documented in the 1st Region (Edirne, Tekirdağ, Kırklareli, Northern Çanakkale), 92 factors were documented in the 2nd Region (İstanbul), 99 factors were documented in the 3rd Region (Sakarya, Kocaeli, Düzce) and 32 factors of threat, destruction and defense were detected in the 4th Region (Yalova, Northern Balıkesir, Northern Bursa) in this period.
The report has found that "the industrial destruction in Thrace, located in the western part of the Northern Forests Geography, has increased incrementally." It has also underlined that "industrial activities and the ensuing changes in the use of land have been rapidly increasing in Thrace."
Referring to Saroz, one of the most important natural areas of this geography, the Association has underlined that "the activities of destruction targeting Saroz have also increased incrementally."
Recalling that 99 factors of threat, destruction and defense were reported in the 3rd Region, it has noted that Sakarya came to the forefront in the news about destruction: "In this three-month period, fires broke out in several forests, industrial and agricultural areas in this region."
The Association has also shared observations about "the mucilage (sea snot) which covered the surface of the Marmara Sea throughout summer and sank to the bottom" in the reporting period. (EMK/SD)
