Report by Forensic Medicine Institute Suggests Çapraz ‘Can Stay in Prison’

It has come to light that the Forensic Medicine Institute gave a report suggesting Sibel Çapraz, who needs an operation of closing colostomy and inversion, “can stay in prison”.

Stating that Çapraz’s intestines are out and she needs a surgery, attorney Banu Güven stressed that her intestines need to be cleaned prior to the operation.
Noting that Çapraz may become permanently disabled in case she gets infected, the attorney Güveren said that the institute and prison administration split hairs to keep Çapraz in prison.
“Wrong medicine was given in prison”
According to a report by Demokrasi 3, attorney Güveren representing Çapraz said, “Sibel’s care is being cared for by her cell-mates. Her intestines are out and she might even become permanently disabled if she gets infected”.
Noting that they have been waiting for the institute’s report for months, Güveren said, “The institute gave a report suggesting that Sibel can stay in prison. Well, the institute and prison administration split hairs to keep Çapraz in prison”.
“She was given wrong medicine in the prison. The prison is now reportedly making preparations for a surgey. Her intestines need to be cleaned prior to the operation”.
Punishment for not standing up
“Their cells were raided as Sibel’s friends tried to change her intestine bag and calls for a head count.
“They tell Sibel to stand up and turn her face towards the wall. She can’t do that, obviously, and they penalize Sibel for not being able to stand up”.
What had happened?
Sibel Çapraz was injured with a bullet hitting her body as she was doing “noisy protest” with the neighborhood’s residents on the street upon gunshots during an operation in Yüksekova district on November 27, 2015. Remaining in intensive unit for nine days, Çapraz was arrested on charge of “being a member of [an] illegal organization” on March 2, 2016.
When arrested, Çapraz, who underwent 15 surgeries during a treatment of 96 days, was being discharged from the hospital where she was receiving treatment to Van Education and Research Hospital to have an operation.
Çapraz firstly stayed in Bakırköy Closed Women Prison, then transferred to İzmir Menemen Type R Prison on June 30. She was transferred to Bakırköy Prison in İstanbul on June 30.
Çapraz still couldn’t have the operation of closing colostomy and inversion, which she had to undergo in February 2016.
Çapraz states that she is in pain and has to rely on other inmates to be able to change her colostomy bag for several times a day. (EKN/TK)
