Refugee Boat Sinks in Didim, 18 Killed

A boat carrying refugees to Greece has sunk in Didim district of Aydın province. According to initial findings, 18 have been killed and 15 others rescued.

According to the initial reports, 18 persons have been killed and 15 others rescued over boat carrying refugees sink in Didim district of Aydın Province yesterday (March 6).

The boat carrying refugees trying to pass to Greece has sunk offshore Mavişehir of Didim district. Over being noticed, three boats and a helicopter subordinated to Coast Guard Command have been dispatched to the region. It has been reported that 15 refugees in the boat determined to have put out to sea from Sağtur Holiday Site have been rescued by fishers. Three of the dead have been reported to be children.

According to the data from International Organization for Migration (IOM), the number of the refugees who have lost their lives drowning in the Mediterranean Sea while trying to get to Europe has reached 2,812 in the first nine months of 2015. (HK/DG)
