Reform on Work Permits for Foreigners

A law making changes to the existing Law on Work Permits for Foreigners has been accepted in parliament. Foreign architects and engineers will be able to work in Turkey. The Turkish Union of Chambers for Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) had criticized the fact that foreigners would not be required to show their foreign diplomas and registrations in professional chambers in order to get a work permit.

The Union claims that this would lead in a decrease in quality and unfair competition for Turkish architects, city planners and engineers.

Results in 45 days

While foreigners have often had to wait for months to get a result to their applications, the new law foresees that decisions on work permits will be made within 45 days.

If the Ministry of Labor and Social Security gives permission, foreign specialist personnel and artists can work in the tourism sector.

Foreigners who have worked in Turkey for at least five years will now be able to obtain an independent work permit. Spouses and children of foreigners who have come to work in Turkey will also be allowed to apply for a work permit after five years.

Foreigners working for the defense industry or projects by consortiums will be exempt from these procedures.

New definition of "foreigner"

The old definition of foreigners as "people who according to the Law on Citizenship do not count as Turkish citizens" has been changed to "people who are not bound to the Turkish Republic with the tie of citizenship". (TK/AG/EÜ)
