The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) Chairperson Prof. Dr. M. A. Yekta Saraç has called all the rectors of state and foundation universities to the emergency meeting today (July 18) at 2 p.m. regarding the coup attempt.
The YÖK’s statement has read “The steps that we take to refine our academic community from this formation will be discussed”.
Saraç pointed out that the rectors will visit the Parliamentary Spokesperson İsmail Kahraman at his office to convey the academy will “believe and respect for democracy and national will.”
“Decisions will be discussed in detail”
The statement made about the meeting in Ankara YÖK Headship is as follows:
“The meeting that will be organised under the chairpersonship of Saraç, the coup attempt against national will and democracy, precautions that taken against parallel state formation and decisions, the steps that we will take to refine our academic community from this formation will be discussed in detail.
“In the meeting, ‘Chairperson Saraç’s opening speech and joint declaration that prepared by all universities together will be open to the press. Afterwards discussions will be in progress with rectors.
“After the meeting all rectors will visit the Parliamentary Spokesperson İsmail Kahraman at his office to convey the academy will ‘believe and respect for democracy and national will’ under the chairpersonship of Saraç.
First statement from YÖK
The statement that the YÖK published on July 16 has read “Our academic community bands together to respect the nation’s will and protect the democracy.
“As the Council of Higher Education, our universities and academic community;
“We are condemning this attempt that organized against the will of our great nation. The day is protecting the democracy day for our university which are the most important protectors of the democracy.
“Our academic community bands together to respect the nation’s will and protect the democracy.” (BK/UA)
