330 academics from 48 universities have been discharged by Statutory Decree No. 686 declared as part of the State of Emergency. The largest number of discharges has occurred with 78 academic discharges at Ankara University
Five academics were discharged from Ankara University Faculty of Language, History and Geography, only four academics were left at the faculty.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Süreyya Karacabey was discharged by Statutory Decree No. 679 dated January 6. Prof. Beliz Güçbilmez, Prof. Tülin Sağlam, Prof. Selda Öndül, research members Elif Çongur and Kürşat Yılmaz were discharged by the Statutory Decree No. 686 dated February 7.
While the academics released statements on social media about the discharges, many people shared messages in protest of the discharges.
Prof. Güçbilmez in a text message wrote “We’ve shut down the shop. The boss has gone crazy”. (BK/TK)
