Greenpeace and Anti-Nuclear Platform members held a protest in front of the Environment and Urban Planning Ministry during the meeting to discuss Akkuyu nuclear power plant’s Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) submitted for the third time.
Greenpeace members attended the meeting and stated their objections to the EIA report and submitted the 250,000 signatures they collected for the rejection of the report.
Objections
Greenpeace’s objections to the EIA report are outlined as follows:
* The report does not answer the question of who will be responsible for damage in the event of a nuclear accident. This topic is unclear in Turkey’s current legal statutes as well.
Guesswork
* The report is based on estimates for the plan is to use a type of reactor never before used in the world.
The waste issue
* The report does not specify the risks of sending the waste to Russia through the Bosphorus. It also does not feature the risks of storing the waste in Turkey or precautions on this front.
Emergency plan
* The emergency plan spans only a 5-kilometer diameter. However, in the incident of an accident, all of Turkey and also neighboring countries will be affected by the radiation.
Lessons from Fukushima
* The fact that seismic research and effects such as flood and tsunami are to be assessed after acquiring the construction license shows that the lessons taken from the Fukushima disaster have not been sufficiently integrated into the Akkuyu EIA report. (YY/PU)
