In the face of an assassination tip off about İstanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation and sent the İstanbul Governor's Office a written correspondence demanding measures for his life safety.
Writing to the Governor's Office, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has demanded that "the necessary be considered and done to take the necessary measures about the life safety of the plaintiff".
Osman Yıldırım, a convict of the Council of State murder in 2006, wrote a letter from prison and tipped off the authorities about the assassination plans targeting İstanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.
After the letter of the convict reached the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, Kemal Osman Polat, a lawyer for İmamoğlu, applied to the İstanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office with the tip-off letter. The Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into the assassination allegations.
In its written correspondence to the Governor's Office within this context, the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has recalled that "an investigation has been launched upon the petition of complaint dated 24/03/2022 which made allegations of attempted wilful killing and threat".
The Office has demanded that the Governor's Office "consider and do the necessary to take necessary measures for the plaintiff's life safety".
What happened?
Convicted in Edirne Type F Closed Prison, Osman Yıldırım sent a tip-off letter to the prison administration on January 31, 2022 and alleged that İstanbul Metropolitan Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu would be assassinated. İmamoğlu's lawyer Kemal Osman Polat said that other tip offs were received about his client before and applied to the prosecutor's office with the petition.
The lawyer announced that they applied to the prosecutor's office and requested measures for İmamoğlu's life safety. (AEK/SD)
