Ankara University Presidency has launched disciplinary proceeding into the four academics reacting against police violence at the campus.
The allegation of the proceeding launched into Prof. Dr. Ayhan Yalçınkaya, Assist. Prof. Dr. Barış Ünlü, and academic members Onur Can Taştan and Hasan Pekdemir is “discussing with security officials and trying to hinder their duties”.
What had happened?
The incident took place on March 31. Following the tension erupting between the students, police entered the campus and used pepper gas. 19 students two of whom were in the exam were taken into custody. The Faculty of Political Science cancelled the exams following the incidents.
Ankara University, Faculty of Political Science Dean, Prof. Dr. Serpil Sancar calling on academic members and students expressed that “during these incidents, the students haven’t reacted negatively by acting circumspectly and that behaved responsibly to not prepare an environment of tension with the police”.
Ankara University, Faculty of Political Science Academic Council issued a decision after the meeting held over police using gas at the campus and detaining students.
The decision announced via press statement in the campus stated that all necessary legal actions will be taken against the police intervention.
Within the same week, Dean of Faculty of Political Science, Prof. Dr. Serpil Sancar resigned. (BK/TK)
