The Press Council, Progressive Journalists Association, PEN ,Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK); Journalists Union of Turkey and Journalist's Association of Turkey have criticized that the Cumhuriyet daily trial was not being covered in the mainstream.
In a joint statement made by the press organizations, it was found "shameful" that the Cumhuriyet daily trial, which was being monitored closely by the media in Europe, was not being covered in the mainstream media except certain newspapers.
"Newsworthy on everyplace on earth"
The joint statement of the press organizations reads as follows:
"The first hearing of the columnists, executives and employees of Cumhuriyet daily who have been behind bars for 267 days will be held on July 24 before İstanbul Justice Palace.
"It is shameful that this trial, which is being observed by journalists from different countries, is not being covered by any newspaper in the mainstream media in the country except by a few.s considered newsworthy in everyplace on earth. For instance, Liberation daily from France has covered this trial on five full pages.
"We condemn all press organs which are not covering this trial, do not stand for its profession and colleagues and impose auto-censorship on themselves". (AS/DG)
