E. P., the owner of popular twitter personality "Allah CC”, has been convicted to 15 months of prison for “overtly humiliating religious values accepted by a faction of the society”. The verdict was issued by Muş Peace Criminal Court.
While the execution of penalty has not been suspended, E.P., a teacher, will serve in prison providing that Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals will ratify the verdict.
Launched in 2012 upon a complaint, the case investigation reached the conclusion that user "Allah CC" shared “insulting and humiliating” content on religious values by “taking God, prophets and angels like himself”.
Attending the hearing, E. P. claimed that he used the account for a while but his account might have been hacked by others.
The court initially sentenced the defendant to 8 months of prison for “overtly humiliating religious values accepted by a faction of the society” which later on climbed to 15 months as “the crime was committed more than once in several occasions”.
The verdict was issued without voluntary or official reductions and not suspended “as the defendant might have committed the crime again”.
The court also deprived the defendant of his state worker post rights. The case was appealed to Turkey’s Supreme Court of Appeals. (EA/BM)
