Riot police and private security guards didn’t allow a student statement protesting the arrival of PM Ahmet Davutoğlu on Yıldız Technical University (YTU) campus, detaining 22 students.
Detained students have been sent to a public hospital for routine forensic health controls.
Sinem Şahin, a YTU student and member of Genç Sen Union, told bianet that police took notice from early hours of the morning.
Upon the news on PM’s visit, on the other hand, students put up posters on campus cafeteria calling students to protest and make a statement in the afternoon.
Sinem Şahin claimed that private security intervened initially by tearing down the posters and banned the march activities.
“After plain cloth policemen attacked, riot police entered the campus cafeteria and attempted to detain students. They entered toilets to detain students.”
Sinem Şahin reminded that their attempts to make a statement had never been blocked previously.
“Just because PM is visit, we were unable to use our most basic democratic right. He would come in the morning, he didn’t. Now they are saying that he will come in the evening. Police is everywhere on campus.” (BK/BM)
