A police officer shot and killed Muhammet Öyke (21) who was riding in a car that allegedly ignored police warnings to halt. After the amendment in Turkey’s Police Officer Duty Act, the latest incident rose the toll of police killings rose to 127, according to International Baran Tursun Foundation.
Fırat News Agency described the incident as follows:
* Police ordered to halt a moving automobile in suspicion at a police check point in Istanbul. The driver allegedly refused to cooperate with police officers and attempted to run away from the scene. A chase started.
* Muhammet Öyke, who was sitting on the back seat of the vehicle, was shot during the chase.
* Öyke’s family has been alerted but it was too late. Forensics Institute returned Öyke's body following an autopsy.
* Öyke was reportedly a fugitive of Turkey’s compulsory military drafting. (EKN/BM)
