The eighth hearing of the case against 18 defendants, who have been charged with "reckless killing and wounding more than one person" in a school dormitory fire that claimed the lives of 11 children and injured 22 students in the district of Aladağ in Adana on November 29, 2016, was held at the Kozan Heavy Penal Court today (January 17).
The court board rejected the requests of the families for a new expert report and ruled that the next hearing of the case shall be held on April 30.
The eighth hearing of the case held today was attended by the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) MPs Ayhan Barut, Müzeyyen Şevkin and Burhanettin Bulut as well as Social Rights Association Chair Melda Onur and attorneys from Adana Bar Association.
"Necessary measures were not taken"
Making a statement at the hearing, Can Atalay, one of the attorneys of the plaintiffs, said that the expert report in the case file refers to "insufficient electrical equipment" as the first cause of the fire and added,
"They did not take the necessary measures. While it was expected that the dormitory building, which was constructed in the 1970s, would be heated by central heating, the building was instead heated via electricity. There is no electricity project. There is no residual current device."
Atalay also indicated that according to the current expert report, the license in the case file does not belong to the dormitory in Aladağ, but belongs to another dorm: "In an official letter issued by the Aladağ Municipality on December 12, 2018, it has been stated that the dormitory, where the fire took place, does not have a license in any way."
The attorneys of the plaintiffs have been requesting that the defendants be penalized not for "reckless killing", but for "killing with eventual intent."
