Owner of Manner Magazine Arrested

Muharrem Cengiz of Manner in the Culture and Arts World, magazine, was arrested at the Istanbul DGM where he went as a witness. He was sent to prison because of statements against him. His magazine and Group Yorum criticized the arrest.

Muharrem Cengiz, the owner of the monthly "Manner in the Culture and Arts World," magazine has been arrested and sent to the Bayrampasa prison.

Cengiz was detained at the entrance Istanbul State Security Court (DGM) where he had gone to attend a hearing as a witness. The police who checked his identity card detained Cengiz. He was arrested by the Istanbul DGM Friday.

Magazine and Group Yorum criticized the incident

According to a statement by the magazine, Cengiz, who is the owner of the Idil Culture Center, was being searched because of the statements by someone else.

Music group Yorum also criticized the arrest. "After Group Yorum member Ihsan Cibecik who was detained on January 22, 2004, Cengiz has also been sent to prison. Our friend's arrest is a conspiracy," said the group. (EO/BB/EA/NM)
