One suspect has been detained related to the killing of Ali Ismail Korkmaz, a Gezi Park protestors. The suspect is expected to appear before a prosecutors this afternoon.
“One suspect has been detained, however this doesn’t mean that the culprits are captured,” advocates Önder Öztürk and Gürkan Korkmaz (Ali Ismail Korkmaz’s brother) told bianet.
Brother Korkmaz protested the mainstream news coverage that portrayed the detention as the capture of all those who are behind his brother’s killing.
“I hope the detainee is one of the culprits,” he continued. “The evidence is being obscured as surveillance camera footage is missing. He has been beaten severely.”
“Just as we were saying that those footage has been somewhat deleted. TRT [Turkey’s state television network] has claimed that it wasn’t Ali Ismail Korkmaz in the footage. The part of footage where we are supposed to see his beatings are not there. We are already saying that. However, Turkey’s remaining 50 percent [a frequently-used expression to portray the divide in the Turkish society between pro-government and anti-government people] has received the message that ‘Korkmaz family was lying’. One shouldn’t gain influence over dead people.” (BK/BM)
